This expression means to loose favour. It comes from the Bible and originally alluded to losing the favour of God. In the story of the creation of the world Adam and Eve lived in innocence in the Garden of Eden until they ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, contrary to the command God had given to them. The saying is used in English since the late fourteenth century.
